Livin' With Jesus
DAY 35

July 3rd, 2008

Jesus of the day: "Running to Egypt"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had three guests tonight and I have to say it feels good to have a bunch of people here again to join me in my life with Jesus.

Although I'm still registered with jesus.de, I havn't visited that platform anymore. It just makes me really uncomfortable. Instead, as I indicated yesterday, I occupied some more time thinking about religion in science fiction literature. It's such an omnipresent theme, for example in the work of Philip K. Dick ("Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" and "Ubik"), but also in Dan Simmons' "Hyperion Cantos".

Unfortunately one SF author once decided that it would be so much better to create a religion in reality than in fiction came up with Scientology. That's right, for those of you who didn't know, L. Ron Hubbard used to write sf-related novels before forming his so called church, which is now probably one of the most controversially discussed sects in the world. And the one with most active Hollywood stars. Whether they are more attractive to small people (hey, Tom Cruise? How's those high heels?) I don't know. I just can't see where they would be doing anything where at least the christian churches make an effort of running shelters for the poor. But let's not dwell on that too long, as the next Scientology Fortress is just down the road.

Going back to SF, it's a shame that it's so widely discarded as bad literature. I think that it has a lot to offer in terms of the future of Christianity for example.
