| DAY 37 July 8th, 2008 Jesus of the day: "Heart Shaped Burger" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yes, you could say that I'm slowly losing my respect for the matter. But you could also say that I'm getting the hang of it. My way, obviously. To call a Jesus image "Heart Shaped Burger" may be disrespectful to some, for me it's just a documentation of a very firt thought an image triggers in my head. And let me tell you, I'm not the only to have had this thought and I'm not the one to have the most outrageous thoughts in the course of this project. Some people accused Jesus of having a hard on on one of the pictures. Now how's that? I could see what they mean though. Which in a way symbolises how people see things different in different times. Which brings us to the matter of what kind of message was intended and what the recipient understood. The two can vary profoundly. In our case, a heart is mistaken for a burger and we saw how easily that happened. How can we be sure that we get the intended message of the bible? How could we anticipate the true aim of that book, since we can never fully understand the times it was written in? We will never be able to fully grasp the meaning of these stories, written and told at that time. We can only guess and the farther time progresses, the wilder these guesses are. I wonder, since after the Old Testament there came the New Testament, why isn't there slowly emerging a third, a new holy book? The Bible 3.0, if you will. Could it be that the time was ripe (has been for some time) and that the church itself is to protectionist an institution and thereby keeping from the people a much needed contemporary holy book? |
