GUESTS OF DAY 10 - April 29th
These three people haven been "driven" here by an old friend
of mine. I met him in Liverpool, then I went to Stuttgart, he went to
London, where I briefly camped in his garden, then he came to Stuttgart,
left for Brussels, where he now is.
These three people are former colleagues of his and he managed to make
them curious enough to come.
One of them actually said that she sort of disliked agnostics (like I'm
one). And I can somehow understand her point of view. Being
an agnostic mean for me, that neither the existence nor the non-existence
of God can be proven, so both possibilities are equally probable.
I could be shying away from making a decision, here. Fair enough and maybe
I am. Still I can't force myself to believe in God just as little as I
could force myself to deny the existence of God. When it comes to the
bible, the story is a different one. And very much different the story
goes when the institution of a church enters the picture.
We also talked about the Islam for a while, as one of them had lived in
a Muslim country for some time. For Muslim, he said, it is not understandable
how you could not believe. Since he is from Germany, everybody assumed
he was christian and that he believed in God following christian rules.
It's interesting how different these two cultures operate. While christian
symbols and themes are a part of our everyday life, sometimes without
us noticing, the connection to their own belief seems to be much stronger
in Islam. In his opinion it is also mucb easier to find a Muslim who has
read the bible and knows a lot about it, than to find a Christian who
could say the same about the Quran or even the bible.
These threads of thought were explored after some minutes of distance
and awkward shyness. Since the three guests had never seen me before,
it must have felt weird for them to enter my apartment and to be part
of a rather weird project. It's not a party, after all. But after some
time the ice broke to a certain extent.
I should try and get more strangers to visit me ...
