JESUS # 13 - May 5th


"Veil of Veronica"

Now this image has a number of qualities to it. The original painting was signed "Gab. Max" in the top right corner. A quick flickr search comes up with this information: "Jesus Christus by Gabriel Max aka Veronica's Handkerchief or Veil of Veronica and dates from 1915" (source).

I really wanted to call it "Shroud of Christ", but it's wrong. The wor "shroud" does fit the image much more than "veil", don't you think?

Open or closed: Depending on the light, Jesus' eyes are either open or closed, which gives this image a rather eerie athomsphere.

Bild Zeitung: On the back you can see tiny fragments of an article of the "Bild Zeitung", but it is impossible to make out what it was about. The fact that it comes from that publication itself is a wild guess. It just looks like it. I will copy what little can still be read (German):

The authors name is ... red Huck (probably Manfred or Alfred).


Upon peeling back the newspaper snippet a little, I discovered something else, something like a stamp. The only letters I can make out are "Düren" or "Dürer" in what appears to be a third line.
