| JESUS # 18
- May 13th "Mount of Olives" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "What are these arrows?" - That is the question most commonly asked by my visitors so far, at least regarding this motive. I seem to remember that the original passage in the bible doesn't mention the angel with the cup. This is a visual representation of the happenings in Matthew 26: 27 And he took a cup and, having given praise, he gave it to them, saying 28 Take of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the testament, which is given for men for the forgiveness of sins (.:.) and then it comes to the lines that have now formed a common saying: 39 And he went forward a little, and falling down on his face in prayer, he said, O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup go from me; but let not my pleasure, but yours be done. So the image is rather in favour of Jesus, as you can clearly see that he is not "on his face", although that is probably not meant to be taken literaly anyway. I'm not sure what the arrows mean (apart from "a sign from above") and I wonder whether the trees in the background are meant to be olive trees. They looked different in Italy where I've them. Shouldn't there, for the sake of clarity, at least be one olive tree in such a picture? I really like the colours though. It's sort of dawn, Jesus' halo is very bright. Baffling however is the quality of his wardrobe (as it is in many images). I'm not very familiar with clothing in these times but I imagine the average attire of even a holy man was rather more rugged than that. |
